Katie, founder of Unknotted Foundation

Hi, I’m Katie.

If you’ve found your way here, I’m truly sorry for the reason you’ve needed to.

I built Unknotted Foundation because I needed it and it didn’t exist. Everything here comes from lived experience — mine, and now the experience of every member who shares theirs.

Welcome from Katie

“I’m so glad you’ve found us. Although I’m sorry for the reason you’ve needed to. I hope this community becomes the place I wish I’d had during my own divorce journey.”

My Story

A few years ago, my life changed when my marriage broke down. Like so many people, I believed I could navigate the legal system with professional help. Over the course of my divorce, I accumulated more than £50,000 of debt in legal fees.

Eventually, I reached my financial limit. I couldn’t get another credit card. I couldn’t get another loan. I had exhausted every option available to keep paying for legal representation. I wasn’t entitled to Legal Aid, so I had no choice but to represent myself as a litigant in person.

I learned as I went, kept going through endless paperwork and stood up for myself in court. It was one of the hardest experiences of my life. There were days when I felt completely overwhelmed, frightened and alone.

Why I Created Unknotted

What I needed wasn’t just legal advice. I needed someone who understood. Someone to reassure me that I wasn’t alone. Someone to say, “I’ve been where you are, and you will get through this.”

That person didn’t exist. So I decided to build the place I wish I’d found.

This isn’t just another divorce website. It’s a community built by someone who’s walked the path, for people who are walking it now. Whether you’re just thinking about separation, in the middle of court proceedings, representing yourself, or rebuilding your life afterwards, you’ll always find someone here who understands.

My Vision

My vision is for Unknotted Foundation to become the one place people turn to throughout their divorce journey — from the first difficult conversation to the first day they truly feel free again.

One day, I hope you won’t need Unknotted Foundation anymore. And when that day comes, I hope you’ll stay just long enough to help the next person find their way through.

Because none of us should have to face divorce alone.

Welcome to the Unknotted family.

When I started Unknotted, I had one hope.

That nobody would have to face divorce feeling as alone as I did.

Every Founding Member is helping turn that hope into reality.

Thank you for believing in this community from the very beginning.

I found Unknotted Foundation on my hardest day. I asked a question, and three people made me feel less alone before bedtime. Now I reply to others whenever I can.

I didn’t know anyone who’d been through it. The community helped me understand that confusion is normal, and that I’m allowed to take it slowly.

Coming back to support others has been the most healing part. My divorce is behind me, but the kindness I found here stays with me.
